Adding to the climate change burden

Stansted Airport was responsible for emissions equivalent to 3.3 million tonnes of carbon dioxide in 2019 – i.e. pre-pandemic – making it the largest single source of CO2 emissions in the East of England.

According to Stansted Airport’s own estimates, a second runway would have increased its CO2 emissions to the equivalent of 9.2 million tonnes, allowing for the effects of Radiative Forcing.
