Adding to the climate change burden

SSE estimates that Stansted Airport was responsible for emissions equivalent to 3.3 million tonnes of carbon dioxide (3.3 MtCO2e) in 2019 making it the largest single source of CO2 emissions in the East of England. Click here to see the basis for SSE’s annual estimates of Stansted’s CO2 emissions.

The CO2 counter on this website’s homepage is based on this annual estimate.

According to Stansted Airport’s own estimates, a second runway would have increased its CO2 emissions to the equivalent of 9.2 million tonnes, allowing for the effects of Radiative Forcing.
